Portland General Store began in the tiny kitchen of Lisa and Troy’s Portland, Maine, townhouse in 2007. The couple had relocated from New York to live a more sustainable lifestyle.
After years of experimentation with formulas inspired by the early twentieth century, the PGS line was launched. Lisa & Troy's dream was to offer people the highest quality toiletries without sacrificing efficacy.
In 2010, they moved the business to an old fruit warehouse in the Old Port, where they are headquartered today. Lisa, a.k.a.. "the nose", still makes a handful of products, including fragrance, shaving soap, and candles. Troy continues to bring innovative ideas in design, sales, and strategy to the team.
The current goal of Portland General Store is to prune down the line to a line of essentials for everyone. Using what they've learned over the years, they have improved formulations; all ingredients are natural, organic and vegan when possible, and Whole Foods approved; no pesticides or tetrasodium EDTA; no synthetics. The new line has a new package design, and PGS is now Leaping Bunny certified.
In addition to the toiletry and fragrance line, they will release some limited edition home goods. Look for their son Ptolemy's backyard honey in the spring of 2017. As passionate beekeepers, they also donate a percentage of sales to organizations such as the Maine State Beekeepers Association, a small way to give back to the natural world that gives us such beautiful ingredients.
